Clouds. Second study. by BPauba Clouds. Second study. by BPauba
Here is another study. I am "trying" to understand form and light. Bah hah ;). You guys have a good one.

Brent.
---
Update:
I revised the study into a color study. The original purpose of this piece was to experiment with the form and space of clouds, and to also figure out how light renders the clouds. So here is the next step, add color :D.

This was actually done awhile ago. I stumbled upon the revised .psd and decided to put ten more minutes into the scene and then send it your way. Hope ya enjoy.

This is the best painting of clouds I have seen since I last saw a painting of clouds!! :D
I notice the smudgedness at the top of the clouds, the only criticism is to not have that there but other than that, WOW.

That looks nice, man :) But I already told you that when you first showed me this coloured version.
Should this up-date be seen as a comeback? It better be

I'm not promising anything, but I would like to get back into the groove. Semester ends soon, so who knows!

What about you? Can we expect some scenes in the near future?!? Maybe, just maybe, we could possibly get that ongoing collab done... you know, that one that has been planned for years?!? lol. ;)

Haha yeah, who knows. Maybe we'll finish that collab before we die.
I've been doing some art myself, not much, some. Somehow I never felt like up-loading those scenes though.

Cool, it does look a bit like a landscape as others have said, but why not pass it off as being "surreal" lol. It's really only the colour, the clouds are almost jet-black, but that does give them an ominous feel to them.

Is this done with a tablet?

Looks great but my one problem with it is that the clouds are a bit solid compared to the light blue sky background.

Problem here is that clouds aren't opaque or solid. They are gas, and as such the studies should reflect this.

clouds always need to feel translucent, and very reflective, although in a matte way.

In this situation there'd be a large amount of blue ambient lighting from the sky in the shadows, and the highlights from the sun would be large soft spots, and some of the outer lone standing tendrils would be lit all the way through the volume.

it would be worth doing some studies from life or photos with clouds.

Judging by the color of the sky and sun halo it looks no later than 4-5 PM in the sky, in that case, there's still enough light comming from the sun to at least make a 'silver lining' type effect on the edges of the clouds I'd think. You also get a fair bit of vapor sometimes between huge towers like that so a big beam would have been kinda appropriate. Greg Martin once said "Light Flows",doesn't seem to in this scene, and clouds in art are often a lot about a interation between water and light.

The biggest thing that caught me right away is just that the clouds couldn't be that dark at that time of the day. Even storm clouds arn't pitch black. I'm sure you can find plenty of pictures taken from airplanes to reference.

One thing you have to know is I did not paint the clouds in color, they are black and white. I did this because I am only working on lighting and the actual form of the cloud. This creates the illusion that these clouds are as solid as can be and are also very very dark, but I am guessing if I did this in color (first it would look ALOT worse) it would not be as solid nor as dark...

not bad :) looking slightly rocky though - not sure if the blue sky and dark grey go together, maybe try softening it up? Nice lighting though :)

I did try to soften it up by merging all the cloud layers together and then gowing around the defined edges and smudging them up a bit. It just really didnt work well, but I totally understnad what you are saying. They are way to defined and constrained to the cloud form. I need to work on haze and looser form. Thanks hannah :D

I think the shapes and form are good but the light needs some work.. more light coming through the clouds and stuff..maybe then it would look more realistic..dunno :P

I totally see where you are getting at. It was a bad idea just to paint in black and white and expect to get good lighting results. Thanks for the comment

I agree with Xiion.. just looks too much like a landscape and not like a cloudscape.. need to be more softened.. but really good feel of depth!

Wow, great sense of depth. Fairly light on the colors, but heavy on the details, lighting and depth. Nice work!

nice amount of detail in it, but i think it needs to be a bit more softer on the edges. looks a bi too much like a landscape rather a cloudscape.

I can see where you are coming from. ALthough I beleive the black and white clouds vs. the color atmosphere really does not do this study good. It creates the false notion of very dense clouding. I beleive if I added color to the image it would instantly soften up the edges because the edges would not contrast with the atmosphere so much. Thank you for the comment.
